DIY SERIES | DISTRESSED DENIM SHORTS

8.05.2013
I have been hinting at this DIY for a couple weeks now on Instagram (@SwellMayde) and am so excited to share the tutorial from the second session of my DIY Series. I spent the afternoon with two lovely style bloggers, Crystal of Cryskay and Jenny of Neon Blush. I adore both of their styles and when we were discussing what DIY to collaborate on, we all loved the idea of distressed denim shorts. We have all worked in the denim industry and are So-Cal natives, so denim cutoffs are pretty much our uniform all year long. Check out our inspiration: here. Stay tuned for photos of our DIY session together. Full tutorial after the break...
Materials:
- boyfriend denim shorts (similiar here and here)
- utility knife
- tweezers
- cardboard (width of the leg opening of shorts)
- tailor's chalk

Steps:
1. Take the tailor's chalk and draw the area you would like to add distress to. I drew two oblong boxes for my distressing. One trick is to find inspiration online or even in your own closet to see what areas and shapes you like best.
2. Add the cardboard to the inside of the leg opening of the shorts.  Be sure to keep the pocket out of the way, before cutting. Using the utility knife, cut horizontal, parallel lines within your drawn boxes about 3/8" apart.
3. Throw your shorts in the washing machine, wash as instructed on the care tag. I added a little bit of detergent. Then, toss in the dryer.
4. Pull the indigo fibers using tweezers, leaving the horizontal white fibers. This will create a more natural look to the distressing.

Looks great! For me washing and wear really is the key to making the distressing look more authentic.
